Material Matters

With textures, smells and feel, Materials tell stories and contribute to the haptic experience of a physical space that engages our entire body. The material surfaces in a place provide clues to the lifestyle of the dwellers and serve as reminders of the memories they’ve witnessed as scratches, wear and tear appear with the passage of time. While narrative quality is embedded in materiality, the intrinsic tactility of materials subverts the dominance of the visual by interacting with the senses that are less active in this image-saturated time we are living in. The haptic sensing we experience from material surroundings provides a warm embrace that reconnects us with our own awareness and sensitivity.
